I recently learned about
PhotoGlow, which makes 1" thick backlit picture frames in various sizes for both wall and desktop. You can print your own pictures or have them do it.
These are apparently several times brighter than a typical monitor, and might be just the thing for the the proper picture.

I have a lot of family slides to scan, and I learned about a place called ScanCafe that is very inexpensive, but does quite a good job. Slade scanning is, by the way, very tedious. But they charge only $0.24/slide by outsourcing it to India. Pop photo had a review and found them excellent.
I'm going to try them out. More on how it develops.
